Newcastle-under-Lyme Flute Ensemble (NULFE)

The Newcastle-under-Lyme Flute Ensemble (NULFE) was established in September 2025 by members of the NULCO flute section, with Hannah Bourne and Thomas Barlow-Coxon leading the formation of the ensemble. The idea for the group grew from the success of the NULCO flute section's performance during Make Music Day 2025, which inspired the creation of a dedicated community flute ensemble.

Under the musical direction of Carolyn Chubb, NULFE provides a welcoming and enjoyable environment for flautists of all ages and abilities to come together, develop their skills, and enjoy making music as part of a friendly community.

The ensemble performs a wide and varied repertoire, ranging from classical favourites to music from television, film, musicals and popular arrangements, ensuring there is something for both performers and audiences to enjoy.

NULFE made its official debut as an affiliated NULCO ensemble at the Make Music Day Concert in June 2026, where it entertained and delighted members of the public with an engaging performance.

The ensemble is open to anyone in the local community who plays the flute. Flutes of all shapes and sizes are welcome, including piccolo, C flute, alto flute and bass flute, allowing players to experience the rich and unique sound of the full flute family.

The group rehearses once a month on a Thursday evening at Wolstanton Methodist Church and warmly welcomes new members, whether you are returning to the instrument or are an experienced player looking for a friendly and rewarding musical opportunity.
