NULJO was formed in 2023 following a highly successful Making Music Day concert, where members of the main orchestra decided to try a few jazz numbers as a small ensemble. The experience was so enjoyable that we persuaded our Leader, Simon Olphin, to establish the group properly and guide us from those early sessions through to our first gig and beyond.
NULJO is not your typical big band. We are a 21-piece ensemble made up of four alto saxophones, four tenor saxophones, one baritone saxophone, two trumpets, one cornet, two soprano saxophones, one clarinet, one violin, two trombones, and our fantastic rhythm section of keys, drums, and bass guitar … not forgetting our stunning vocalist, Mandy.
Our repertoire spans a wide range of styles, from classic big band swing to modern-day numbers, all given a distinctive jazz twist. Many of our musicians are featured throughout the programme, with solos showcasing the depth of talent within the band. Most NULJO members are also part of NULCO, the main orchestra, and the group brings together players ranging in age from 15 to 70, reflecting both the experience and diversity within the ensemble.
In February 2025, we made our first official outing with our debut concert, NULJO: For The Love Of Groove. The gig was very well received and attracted a strong opening audience of around 80 people. Since then, we have continued rehearsing twice a month, preparing for our second concert in February 2026, From NULJO With Love, and for future performances beyond.
Our Leader, Simon, has been a musician for most of his life, dating back to his school years. He has been a member of the Trent River Big Band for over 20 years, where he played first trumpet and now leads the band. This experience, along with his earlier musical career and background as a teacher, has given him a deep understanding of the music and style, and all the qualities needed to lead NULJO confidently in the right direction.
With a growing repertoire, a strong sense of community, and an evident passion for jazz, NULJO continues to develop both musically and creatively. The band is excited to build on its early success, bring high-quality jazz performances to new audiences, and continue sharing the love of groove for many years to come.
